Crocheting a gift for a new mom is one of my favorite things to make and give. I love the idea of giving a handmade gift for one of the most precious new lives we celebrate with our families and friends. My typical gift is a crocheted blanket and hat, However, there are times when I simply don’t have the time to make a full blanket. That is how I came up with the idea to make this darling Button Up Waves Hooded Cocoon.

The project is about half the size of a blanket, it is made in one long piece and then the “hood” is seamed together and buttons are added along the sides. The buttons make it easy to lay a sleeping baby inside. It’s kind of like a sleeping bag for babies and it is one of my top selling patterns.

The hooded cocoon is made using a combination of stitches that is a 4 row repeat and creates a beautiful wavey stitch. The stitches crocheted also make a nice and soft fabric for the baby to lay on.

Button Up Waves Hooded Cocoon Stitches

When working this stitch combination, it is best to work your stitches slightly looser than you normally crochet. Doing thst and using a nice medium to heavy worsted weight yarn will create the ultra-cozy feel, or as my daughter called it, “Huggable.”. The yarn I originally used in this cocoon (the one in the photos was Sprightly yarn) has been discontinued. However, it is very similar to many popular yarns such as: Red Heart with Love, Hobby Lobby I Love this Yarn, Loops & Threads Impeccable, Lion Brand Vanna Choice.

Love the Hooded Cocoon Idea

If you love this idea and would like to make another one with a little different look, check out my Cross My Heart Hooded Cocoon. After years of popularity with the Button Up Waves, I decided to design another one with a more feminine look to the stitches and I personally love how it turned out.
