Mountain Lodge Crochet Blanket Pattern

Someone asked me what inspires your designs. The answer is simple: textures, colors and eye appeal. When I design crochet blankets many things can spark an idea, but I will admit that quilting has always amazed me. I love all the small pieces, straight seams, and the eye for perfection. Log Cabin quilts are one of my favorites and inspired my latest, Mountain Lodge blanket design.

Mountain Lodge Blanket crochet pattern

If you are not familiar with some of the history behind the Log Cabin Quilt designs and the meaning, I would love to share just a small tid bit with you. The design dates back as early 1830 in Egypt, but became popular in the 1860’s in during the Civil War. The following explains the importance of the center color square:

Early Log Cabin blocks were hand-pieced using strips of fabrics around a central square. In traditional Log Cabin blocks, one half is made of dark fabrics and the other half light. A red center symbolized the hearth of home and a yellow center represented a welcoming light in the window.

Mountain Lodge Designs Modern Twist

While I was designing the Mountain Lodge blanket, I had a few things I wanted to acheive. I’ll explain each of those below and hopefully you will get a good understanding about the design, the construction and the richness in the pattern.

The Stitches create a light fabric

I wanted the blanket to be a lighter weight design and a pattern that wouldn’t eat up a ton of yarn. My hope was to be able to grab this blanket and wrap up for a morning cup of coffee on the front porch in the spring and fall.

Mountain Lodge Blanket close up

To acheive this, I went back and used one of my favorite stitches, the Extended Single Crochet. I have a tutorial on the stitch combination I used that you can watch to help see how easy the pattern is. The tutorial is not specific to this pattern, but shows how to work the combination of stitches. You can view the video by clicking HERE.

Deciding on Colors

Choosing your colors for a design can change the entire look of the blanket. I knew I wanted to stick with the “warmth of the home” for the center of the blanket. I was hoping for a softer look so decided on a light pink. Instead of doing all the squares a different color I stuck with the tradition of a dark and light color side but kept the light side all cream. I went with calming greens to accent the pink and kept the naeutral grey for the outline.

Choosing the square layout

In my designs I typically don’t like to do things in a traditional way. Stacking the squares directly on top of one another is lovely but I was hoping for a more modern twist. Deciding the angle the squares in a diamond shape gives the blanket an whole new look.

But, this creates a challenge with making the blanket a rectangle. I had to put my thinking cap on and design some half and quarter squares (triangles) to fill in those edges and create a nice shape to the blanket. By making these odd shaped edge pieces in a solid color really makes the actual log cabin pieces pop in the design.

Mountain Lodge Blanket

A Simple Border

A simple border allows for the eyes to really focus on the design elements of the blanket. I didn’t want to loose the focus on the details in the log cabin squares so a very basic border was crocheted. This is easy to adjust the thickness as well by adding or deleting rows.

Easily adjust the size

The sample blanket was made using a light weight yarn called Mighty Stitch, I loved how this made the blanket so light weight. The final size was 35” wide X 42” high.

You can use a heavier weight yarn. However, that will effect your gauge. Gauge on a blanket does not have to match like it does while crochet garments and such. However, be aware that not meeting the gauge will alter the amount of yarn needed.

You can easily adjust the size of the blanket by adding more squares. I would love to see this design made in a full throw or bed spread size.

Mimmo Caddy

My Mimmo Caddy

While making the Mountain Lodge Blanket you make a lot of small pieces. This makes it an ideal project for on the go. But, you need something to tote all the pieces around with. This is why I am in love with my Mimmo Caddy. If you don’t have one your should check it out, I have a full review of why this tote is my favorite.

Music To My Soul Expansion Pack – 10 Crochet Blanket Patterns

Last year I designed some music blankets for each of my children. I did this to show them how important music is and that whole heartedly encouraged them to continue their love of music. The blankets where a huge hit and I received so many requests for more instruments that I am now releasing a Music to My Soul Expansion Pack!

You got it! It includes 10 popular instruments in the percussions, string and brass groups.

Expansion Pack Music to my soul blankets

Behind the Designs of the Music Blankets

When I designed the original Music to My Soul Blankets I was striving for a modern look to classic instruments. The result was a silhouette of the instrument with the added twist of a split colorway which created a unique, modern and young vibe that has been loved by all generations.

You can see how amazing these blankets turned out in the image below. BUT, please take note that these 3 designs are NOT included in the Expansion Pack. You can find more info about them by clicking HERE.

Instruments Included in the Expansion Pack

As I was deciding which instruments to include in the Expansion Pack, I was looking for the most popular instruments and the ones that had a distinct shape. Looking into all the different instrument groups I decided to include the following:

Percussion:

I included a snare drum in a equally vertical split color block which creates a fun balance to the instrument. A full drum set in a diagonal split helps emphasize the many dimensions and layers of drums.

Percussion Expansion Pack

String:

The string instruments are always a hit, this expansion pack has 3 popular instruments included. The harp is a statement piece and is elegant in just a silhouette, so I kept this design basic with another vertical split silhouette. The electric guitar is bold instrument that wants lots of attention resulting in a double split, eye catching design. Then, there is the banjo, what can I say? Simple is sometimes what speaks volume and I believe this design is perfect for such an upbeat instrument.

String Expansion Pack

Brass:

The Brass Expansion Pack is the larges, there are so many fun, bold and big instruments. It was hard to decide which ones to include. But, I settled on the trumpet, tuba, saxophone, sousaphone and trombone. All the angles where carefully picked to express a vibe ideal to the instrument.

Brass Expansion Pack

The Stitch

Are you looking at these graphs and thinking, “no way am I crocheting a blanket in single crochet!”. Haha, that would be my first thought too. I searched high and low and played with so many stitches to find the right one that aligned perfectly for graph designs. I came up with a fun stitch that works up quick.

Stitch Sampler Music to my souls

The pattern includes photo tutorials on how to work the stitch and how to work the color changes for the graph.

Grandioso Guitar Crochet Blanket Pattern

I have always felt that music is an important part of life. The best way to appreciate music is to play an instrument. Growing up I took piano lessons for 5 years. Now as a Mom, all 3 of my children play an instrument.

When a musician learns to read, play and perform music, they gain mental, cognitive and emotional health benefits that will last throughout their lifetime.

Guitar

Here my son is playing at his first guitar holiday recital. He was so cute and so proud of his performance. I cannot wait to see and hear many more.

Grandioso Guitar Blanket

My guitar player is my 2nd son, he loves trying new songs out and is a great musician. He is a very cheerful kiddo and so I was immediately drawn to the Red Heat Roll with It Melange (color: Paparazzi). Wanting different angles than the violin, I had the silhouette split center of the guitar by to one side of the blanket for a unique look. The blanket is reversible (all the designs are) so the guitar can be on the left or the right side.

The name Grandioso was suggested by, Chasity, as soon as I heard it I knew this had to be the official name. Grandioso is Spanish for “Great” and this just fits this blanket and the kiddo it was designed for.

Grandioso Guitar

The Grandioso Guitar Blanket is a fun, funky, unique, modern and classic blanket with a young vibe to it. However, any generation will love the classic design of the instruments and the music theme.

The blanket is made from the bottom up (this is NOT a C2C).

Music to My Soul Stitch Sample

I love the beautiful transition in the colors of the Red Heart Roll With It Melange yarn. It is a soft yarn and the color changes are natural, there won’t be any huge jumps in color or abrupt changes. It is a beautiful change in colors and specks, the yarn itself reminds me of sock yarn only because of this. The yarn is a worsted #4 weight.

The Violin was my first design that I crocheted. My oldest son really wanted me to use purple and the Red Heart Roll with It Melange (color: Autograph) was perfect. The name of this blanket is self explained, thanks to Shanan for the suggestion:

Here my daughter is playing at her first piano recital, she even composed her own song after only a few months of lessons. She was very nervous (if you couldn’t tell) but played so well.

What a fun way to describe the jazzy colors in the Piano blanket (name suggested by Angela)! My daughter is the pianist in our family and saying she is the Pizzazz in the household is an understatement-LOL.

The piano blanket has the keys laying along the top or the bottom edge. In my sample photos the piano keys are shown along the bottom of the blanket. However, with no adjustments the keys can lay along the top of the blanket resulting in the keys being at your hands when you pull the blanket over you!

I wanted to emphasize to children how much I love that they all play an instrument. Therefore I combined my crochet skills and came up with the Music to My Soul Blankets.

Music to My Souls

Behind the Designs of the Music Blankets

Whenever I sit down to crochet a new design I research and see what is already out there. I saw many graph piano blankets and even some C2C guitar blankets. However, I wanted something different and needed something completely new. I was in search for a fun, funky, unique, modern and young vibe.

I finally decided on the split silhouette of instruments resulting in that modern twist. Next I knew my kids wouldn’t want traditional colors, therefore the popularity of self striping yarns was a natural pick. I couldn’t be more happy with the results.

Red Heart Roll with It Melange

One of the most difficult parts of this blanket was finding a unique stitch that would work in the graph. It was important to me to work the design from the bottom up and horizontal rows. I finally found a fun, easy and quick stitch that stacks directly on top of the stitch from the prior row. This results in the best graph with nice lines.

Howling Wolf Blanket – Crochet Pattern

The Howling Wolf Blanket is a new individual pattern that coordinates with the rest of the blanket designs in the Interchangeable Wildlife Blanket ebook. All the blanket patterns feature a striking animal silhouette that is framed with a beautiful crochet texture in a frame (border) of the blanket.

The Howling Wolf blanket was inspired by the lovely bold Native American decor that I love seeing in so many different settings. This blanket will appeal to so many different people though. It will touch everyone on a different level giving them that “warmth of home”, “weekend at the cabin” or “my native land” feel.

Howling Wolf

The design in the blanket panels features a unique feathering look to the stitches. This is actually a very easy stitch to crochet and you will love the look and feel it creates.

The corner pieces of the Howling Wolf blanket feature a whimsical look. Resembling a dream catcher or some have said wagon wheel, this cornerstone to your blanket will set off just the right detail to make it pop!

About the Pattern

I used Lion Brand Heartland yarn for the rich burnt orange color. I love working with this line of yarn. It is soft, works up nicely, makes your stitches stand out and washes up well. For the white background color it is essential that you either use the same brand and weight of yarn, or use a yarn that has the same WIP (wraps per inch). I used Caron Simply Soft for the background resulting in 2 different yarns that worked well together.

The main silhouette panel has multiple formats in the pattern for you to choose from. A chart, or graph, is used to crochet the bear silhouette. At the end of the pattern, there is an included enlarged graph, simply print off all 4 pages and tape them together.

If you are unfamiliar with crocheting from a graph then your in luck. A supplement has been added to the pattern to assist you along the way. The supplement is a written form of the graph and is explained in a little more detail. Essentially, it states how many stitches to complete in each color. This supplement can also be used as a way to double check the accuracy of your work.

Interchangeable Wildlife Blankets – Crochet Pattern Bundle

Growing up in one of the most beautiful states, Idaho, I have a deep love of the outdoors. The forests and mountains are where I feel the most relaxed and recharged. Watching wildlife is always so mesmerizing and I wanted to capture that in a handmade crochet blanket.

A blanket is used to wrap yourself up and keep you cozy and warm, howeder, it can also be displayed across the back of a couch, on a blanket ladder or just draped across a bench. Essentially, it can be turned into a piece of art. No matter what you do with the blanket, these wildlife blankets are a masterpiece.

Interchangeable Wildlife Blankets

The Interchangeable Wildlife Blanket Bundle is a unique set of crochet patterns. Each blanket features a bold silhouette of a animal found in the forest, the animal stands out against a contrasting background. The wildlife animal is then framed with a tich textured border to finish off your masterpiece.

Why do you call the Wildlife Blankets bundle “interchangeable”?

INTERCHANGEABLE [in-ter-cheyn-juh-buh-l]: adjective

1. capable of being put or used in the place of each other:interchangeable symbols.

2. capable of replacing or changing places with something else:an interchangeable part.

source: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/interchangeable

Each piece of the blankets can be changed out for the same pieces of another blanket. Each pattern is a stand alone pattern, but they are all made the same size so they can be interchanged.

Wildlife Animal Silhouette Information and Options

The main silhouette panel has multiple formats for you to choose from. A chart, (or graph), is included to help create the wildlife animal silhouette, in addition, at the end of each pattern the graph has been enlarged so you can print it off on 4 pages and tape together for a larger format you can follow.

There are 5 different animal silhouettes that you can pick to crochet. Each one is very distinguishable and pops with a bold contrast in colors, therefore, it may be a tough decision. Now choose from a: fish, moose, bear, wolf or deer.

Wildlife Animal Silhouettes

However, If you are not familiar with crocheting from a graph, I have also included a quick written out reference. This is a written form of the graph and is explained in detail with how many stitches in each color to work. This piece of the pattern can also be a good way to double check your work.

Choose one of the Textures Side Panels

Once you have chosen a silhouette you can then pick one of the beautiful textured side panels. These panels are used to frame out the silhouettes, because they run along each side, top and bottom of the blanket creating an astounding look!

Pick a Corner Square

The corner pieces of your blanket can be detailed or simple, however, they all can look very pleasing with any of the panels. The possibilities are endless. Which corner square is your favorite?

I hope you get excited about all the possibilities in designing your own blanket. I need to mention that all these designs (with the exception of the fish on blanket) are available in a book by Leisure Arts. If you have already purchased this book, then you will only need to add the Fish On Blanket to your collection.

Don’t Moose With Me Crochet Blanket Pattern

The Don’t Moose with Me Crochet Blanket Pattern is a fun oversized throw blanket. The silhouette of the moose is defined with an outline that makes it pop, while the silhouette is emphasized with the striped background.

Don't Moose with Me Blanket Crochet Pattern

The blanket is made using a simple stitch repeat. The pattern is not a C2C blanket, it is worked from the bottom up in short rows.

The pattern has a couple different formats that you can follow. It includes a color chart in 2 sizes: one page for a quick print off and go option or a 4 page enlarged format for easier tracking and viewing. There is also a written format that includes how many stitches to crochet in each color.

The Don’t Moose with Me pattern includes full photo tutorials for all the techniques you need to complete the blanket.

The blanket is fun to create and can fit in nearly any decor style by simply changing the color scheme. The extra large tassels are completely optional, they add a playful and whimsical look to the throw blanket.

The blanket is an extra large throw blanket which is extra nice to snuggle up in. The completed size is 40” wide X 52” long.

You can make the blanket in any worsted weight yarn. I used Sprightly Acrylic Worsted weight yarn, I love the softness of this yarn, especially for blankets. It is a full, rich and plush yarn with bold colors. Check out the entire Sprightly color line by clicking this {affiliate} link HERE.

Fish On Blanket – Crochet Pattern

Releasing a new pattern is always a nervous moment because I question whether others will love it as much as I do. As I release the Fish On Blanket today, I am pretty confident this one will be loved by many. I poured so much energy and love into this design that I made for my hubby.

The Fish On Blanket was designed as a new matching afghan to the entire Wildlife Cables Afghan Book. The striking silhouettes of the animals with an intricate border make designs appeal to many. Anyone who love the great outdoors and wants that “warmth of home” or a “weekend at the cabin” feel will think this blanket is a show stopper.

Fish On Blanket Crochet Pattern

The design of the blanket features a detailed and intricate frame that has twisting cables and an eye catching pattern. Likewise, the corner piece has a touch of whimsical charm. It is designed in a circle pattern that features a little more elegant look of maybe a wildflower. Well, that is kind of what I think of as I sit streamside watching my husband fish.

About the Pattern

I used Premier Yarn in Christmas Green and White for the Fish On Blanket. I really liked working in this yarn, it gave the blanket a little more of a plush feel than the other wildlife blankets. The bright, but not too bright, color of the Christmas Green was just what I was hoping for and it paired perfectly with the stark white contrast of the silhouette background.

The main silhouette panel has multiple formats for you to choose from. A chart, or graph, is included to help create the fish silhouette. At the end of the pattern the graph has been enlarged so you can print it off on 4 pages and tape together for a larger format you can follow.

However, If you are not familiar with crocheting from a graph, a supplement has been added to the pattern. The supplement is a written form of the graph and is explained in detail, but essentially, it states how many stitches in each color to work. This piece of the pattern can also be a good way to double check your work.

Deep Waters Prayer Shawl CAL

During the month of September, I will be hosting a Crochet Along. The Crochet Along will feature a Prayer Shawl with beautiful textures and natural color changes.

The design of the prayer shawl is to be appealing to the eye. It has a subtle pattern change within the color changes. The stitches create a top that gives you the warmth your body needs. While the lower portion of the shawl is an open, flowy stitch that provides a beautiful drape and open look. I just love the design and hope you do to.

What is a Prayer Shawl?

You may be asking yourself, What is a Prayer Shawl. I found this beautiful description from the Lion Brand website:

Prayer shawl. Peace shawl. Comfort shawl. Mantle. Whatever name you give them, they serve the same purpose. These are a wearable hug crafted with love and intent from maker to recipient. Whether it be personal words, verse, song, prayer, mantra, or something else, it is these thoughts imbued in the shawl with each stitch that make them what they are.

Lion Brand Website ( http://www.lionbrand.com/blog/what-is-a-prayer-shawl/ )

I couldn’t have explained it better myself. It’s a “Wearable Hug” that has been crocheted, with thoughts and prayers, of the recipient through the entire process of making the shawl. For this design, that process will include a crochet along format.

What is a Crochet Along?

A crochet along, also known as a CAL, is a group of people who work on making the same project together at the same pace. The wonderful part about online, is that we can do this with a larger group of people who enjoy our same craft of crochet. We have the ability to show our progress with one another and cheer each other on, all while being in the comfort of our own homes.

Sweet Serendipity Blanket – Crochet Pattern

Sweet Serendipity… what do you do when a box of this amazingly soft and scrumptious yarn (Sprightly Spectrum) arrives on your doorstep?

First off a Happy Dance!!! LOL-I am not kidding. Then, just sit and admire the colors and dream of crocheting with it. I typically am not a fan of self striping yarns, but the Sprightly Spectrum yarns colors fade into one another in a very eye-appealing way. The transition is soft and lovely. See their entire colorway of the Sprightly Spectrum yarn, HERE.

Because the yarn is self striping I knew I needed to finds some fun stitches to make the blanket fun to work up. I wanted it to be a little airy, have a little texture and a new stitch that will allow me to hopefully teach you all something new. Bam, the Sweet Serendipity Blanket was created <3
