The newest addition to my Music to My Soul Blanket Collection celebrates this big, bold brass instrument with a modern crochet design that combines a recognizable tuba silhouette with my signature color-changing technique.

A Tuba With a Modern Twist
When designing this blanket, I knew I wanted the tuba to be instantly recognizable.
Tubas have so many interesting details—the large bell, curved tubing, valves, and winding shape—that simply reducing the instrument to a basic silhouette would have meant losing some of what makes it special.
That’s where the horizontal split design came in.
Instead of splitting the tuba vertically, I turned the design on its side and created a horizontal split silhouette. This allowed me to preserve more of the instrument’s details while still giving the blanket the modern, graphic style that has become a signature of the Music to My Soul collection.
The result is a design that feels both artistic and recognizable.
Why a Horizontal Split?
Each instrument presents its own challenges when translating it into a crochet graphic.
For the tuba, the horizontal layout worked especially well because of the instrument’s shape. It gives the tuba room to stretch across the blanket while keeping the important details visible.
The split creates an interesting visual effect without taking away from the character of the instrument.
As you crochet, the two sections come together to form the complete tuba, creating a fun moment when the design really begins to reveal itself.
Watching the Tuba Take Shape With Color Changes
One of the things I enjoy most about designing these music-inspired blankets is using color changes to create the instrument directly within the crochet fabric.
Rather than attaching an image to a completed blanket, the tuba is built into the design as you crochet.
The contrasting sections of color create the split effect and help define the shape of the instrument. As you work row by row, the tuba gradually becomes recognizable.
