There is just something about hedgehogs that makes them impossible not to love! Their tiny faces, little feet, and prickly backs make them one of the most charming creatures you can find in the woodland.
I wanted to capture that playful personality in a blanket design that could be enjoyed by all ages.
The Hedgehog Blanket would be adorable in a nursery or child’s room, but its classic silhouette also makes it a fun throw for an older child, teen, or adult who loves animals and nature.
It’s whimsical without being overly childish, making it a versatile design that can grow with the person who enjoys it.
Created with Color-Changing Crochet
The hedgehog silhouette is crocheted directly into the blanket using my signature color-changing technique.
Rather than crocheting a separate appliqué or adding the image afterward, the silhouette develops as you work each row. This creates a clean, finished look while allowing you to create a recognizable image with nothing more than yarn and your crochet hook.
If you’ve never tried this technique before, it is such a fun skill to add to your crochet toolbox. Once you understand how to change colors and carry your yarn strategically, you can create all kinds of images and silhouettes in your crochet projects.

Choose Your Own Colors
One of the best parts of this design is that you can make your hedgehog look completely different simply by changing your colors.
Stick with earthy browns and warm neutrals for a traditional woodland look, or have some fun with unexpected colors! A soft neutral background with a darker hedgehog would create a modern look, while brighter colors could make this design especially playful for a child’s room.
You could even make a whole collection of woodland blankets, each with its own color palette and animal silhouette.

- Size K/3/6.50mm crochet hook
- Size I/5/5.50 mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
