Crochet is one of those skills that looks complicated at firstโฆ until you realize itโs built on a handful of simple techniques repeated over and over again. If youโve ever felt excited to learn crochet but also a little overwhelmed by where to start, youโre in the right place.
Welcome to Crochet Basics, an educational foundation series designed to support you wherever you are in your crochet journeyโand whenever you happen to find it.
Hi, Iโm Christine, the crochet designer behind Sweet Potato 3. Iโve been crocheting and designing for many years, and along the way Iโve learned that crochet doesnโt have to feel complicated to be beautiful or rewarding. My designs and teaching focus on helping crocheters truly understand why techniques workโso you can feel confident picking up new patterns, adjusting projects, and enjoying the process as much as the finished piece.
This Crochet Basics series was created to answer the questions I see crocheters ask most often and to give you clear, supportive information as you learn the craft of crochet.
This series will always be available, which means you can follow along at your own pace. To begin (in January 2026), new articles will be released every other week, but once published, the entire series will remain available for you to move through whenever youโre ready. Whether youโre starting today, three months from now, or a year down the road, you wonโt need to wait for the next lesson to keep learning.

What This Series Is All About
This series is meant to be an informative companion to your crochet learning. Each article focuses on understanding crochetโthe tools, techniques, and concepts that help everything else fall into place.
Weโll explore topics like:
- Choosing the right yarn and hook
- Understanding crochet patterns
- Managing tension
- Gauge, shaping, and finishing techniques
- What you can create with simple shapes
Think of this series as the why behind crochet, not the how.

What This Series Is Not
While Crochet Basics covers foundational knowledge, it is not a step-by-step โlearn to crochetโ course. You wonโt find full stitch tutorials or guided projects here.
Instead, these posts are designed to be used alongside:
- Learn-to-crochet videos
- Beginner patterns
- Hands-on practice
Crochet is learned by doing, and this series is here to support that process with clarity, encouragement, and helpful context.

How the Series Is Structured
To make things easy to follow, this series is organized into short, focused lessons. When the series is first released, new articles will be published every two weeks. If youโre reading this later, you can move straight through the series without waiting.
Crochet Basics Series Schedule:

Letโs Learn Together
Thereโs no rush when it comes to learning crochet. Some concepts click right away, and others take timeโand thatโs completely normal. Whether you read one article today or work through several at once, this series is here whenever you need it.
Iโm so excited to share Crochet Basics with you and to help make this the year you feel more confident, informed, and inspired in your crochet journey.

Up next: Getting Started with Crochet โ the supplies you need, how to read a yarn label, and how to choose the right yarn and hook for your first project.
Letโs make this the year you truly enjoy learning crochet ๐
