October is a powerful month for the crochet communityโand for good reason. It marks the return of the annual Crochet Cancer Challenge, a meaningful event that brings makers together to create handmade hats for those battling cancer.
If youโve been part of this challenge before, welcome back. If this is your first year, youโre in the right place to make a real impact with your crochet skills.
What is the Crochet Cancer Challenge?
The Crochet Cancer Challenge is a month-long charity crochet event held every October. Throughout the month, talented designers from across the community come together to share free crochet hat patternsโall with one purpose: to support cancer patients.
Each pattern is offered as a free download for a limited time. In exchange, participants are asked to make a simple pledgeโto crochet and donate at least one hat to someone undergoing cancer treatment.

This event has grown into a long-standing tradition since it began in 2014, uniting thousands of crocheters worldwide through creativity, compassion, and generosity.
How the Challenge Works
Participating is simple and accessible for crocheters of all skill levels:
- Visit this post daily throughout October
- Download the featured free crochet hat pattern, which will be listed further down in this post, using the coupon code “MakeADifference”
- Make at least one hat using the pattern
- Donate your finished hat to a local hospital, cancer center, organization, or person you know battling cancer
New patterns are released each weekdayโgiving you plenty of opportunities to contribute.
Why Crochet Hats for Cancer Patients?
For many individuals undergoing chemotherapy, hair loss is one of the most visible and emotional side effects. A handmade crochet hat provides more than warmthโit offers comfort, dignity, and a reminder that someone cares.
Every stitch carries intention. Every finished hat becomes a small act of kindness during a difficult time.

The Impact of the Crochet Community
Year after year, this challenge continues to grow. Thousands of hats are pledged and donated globally, demonstrating the incredible generosity of the crochet community.
Whether you make one hat or several, your contribution matters. Together, these small acts create a meaningful, collective impact.

Spread the Word & Grow the Impact
One of the most powerful ways to support this challenge is simply by sharing it.
Invite your friends, crochet groups, and online communities to participate. The more people who join, the more hats are madeโand the more lives are touched.

Add a Personal Touch with Printable Hat Labels
Including a simple label with your handmade hat is a thoughtful way to make your donation feel even more personal. Printable labels are easy to use and add a meaningful finishing detail to each piece.

You can print the labels at home, cut them out, and punch a hole at the top. Then, use a small piece of yarn or ribbon to tie the label securely to your hat.
To make your donation even more special, consider writing a short message, note of encouragement, or a prayer on the back of the label. These small, heartfelt touches can bring comfort and remind the recipient that someone is thinking of them during a difficult time.
Code for Free Download
To get your free download, be sure to use coupon code “MakeADifference“. These codes are good for a minimum of 24 hours for each day’s featured hat design. However, some designers have opted to leave their downloads available all month long. But if you see a hat you love and the code has expired, you are more than welcome to still support that designer and purchase their pattern. It’s a simple way to tell them thank you for their participation in this year’s designs.

The Crochet Cancer Challenge is more than a pattern roundupโitโs a way to use your craft for something bigger.
As you crochet this October, know that your time and talent are making a difference. One hat may seem small, but collectively, they bring warmth, comfort, and hope to those who need it most.

Christine,
I love this cause. Being a breast cancer survivor going on 11 years now, I understand the need for hats. I crochet and am thinking about participating. However, I do not Facebook or Instagram. These seem to be the two big social media sites. Also, I do not have a website. Iโm just an older lady who loves to crochet. I also live in a very small community of 1300 residents. Can I still participate? I just signed up for your email newsletter.
Thank you, Nancy Woods
YES!!! You can still participate (I am also from a very small town and I just donate to our a town a couple hours away). If you signed up for the newsletter, you should get all the updates and still be able to participate.
I like to try to help
I would like to do this. Just waiting for the patterns.
It all starts October 1
