Finding Creativity in Scrap Yarn
I woke up with that familiar urge to crochetโpart creative itch, part determination to finally work through some of my yarn stash and turn it into something beautiful. As I dug through my shelves, I came across a few skeins of gorgeous super bulky yarn that Mary Maxim had sent me last year, it was in the prettiest cream and teal combination. I didnโt have a plan yet, just a hook in hand and a desire to create, so I started crocheting in the round with the cream yarn and let the stitches guide me.
By the time I was nearing the end of the skein, I paused, took a step back, and it clickedโthis would make the perfect round pillow. With a 12″ pillow form already on hand, I quickly worked up a replica of the front for the back and began thinking about how to incorporate that pop of teal. A simple border just wouldnโt doโฆthis project needed something fun. Thatโs when the idea for a bold, petal-inspired edge came to life, completely transforming the piece into a charming flower pillow. It all came together faster than I expectedโless time than it takes to watch a movieโand now you can create your own just as quickly with this free pattern.

Materials Needed to Make a Flower Crochet Pillow:
- 180 total yards of Super Chunky Yarn in 2 colors – sample was made with Mary Maxim Starlette Chunky yarn, 1 skein of Teal and 2 skeins of Cottonwood (each skein is 60 yards).
- Crochet Hook J (6.00 mm)
- 12″ Round Pillow Form (you can order on Amazon, check the prices, when I ordered it was $1 cheaper to order the 2 pack than it was to order 1, to see the ones I used, click HERE)
- Stitch Marker
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape

Crochet Flower Pillow Pattern Notes:
This design will be worked in continuous rounds; you will not join at the end of each row. Instead, you will continue to the next row. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning stitch of each round.
I found it easiest to just check your gauge as you crochet, there is a reminder note to stop after round 4 is completed to measure.
The pillow cover will be made by crocheting 2 pieces, round circles. After both circles are completed you will stitch them together and continue to crochet the flower petal border.
Crochet Flower Pillow Cover Circles – make 2
R1: Ch 2, 7sc in the 2nd ch from hook, do not join, pull the beginning strand of yarn to close the center hole (7)

R2: 2sc in each st around (14)
R3: [2sc in next st, sc in next st], repeat [ ] around (21)
R4: [2sc in next st, sc in each of the next 2 sts], repeat [ ] around (28)
Gauge Check: At this point, measure across the center of the circle; it should measure 4″ across

R5: [2sc in next st, sc in each of the next 3 sts], repeat [ ] around (35)
R6: [2sc in next st, sc in each of the next 4 sts], repeat [ ] around (42)
R7: [2sc in next st, sc in each of the next 5 sts], repeat [ ] around (49)
R8: [2sc in next st, sc in each of the next 6 sts], repeat [ ] around (56)
R9: [2sc in next st, sc in each of the next 7 sts], repeat [ ] around (63)

Not Quite Done:
You have now completed 2 circles, one for the back of the pillow and one for the front. The next step is to work 1 round in the petal color on each circle. You will work one circle following the instructions below and fasten off, then work the second circle, but NOT fasten off. This will allow you to easily join the two circles to create the main construction of the pillow.
Using a contrasting color of yarn, join with a slip stitch in any stitch from round 11 of the pillow. Do not chain, work a single crochet in each stitch around. There will be 77 stitches in the round. Joining with an invisible join in the 1st stitch of the round (of one of the circle pieces). Fasten off and repeat on the 2nd circle. However, do NOT fasten off on the 2nd circle, you will continue to crochet as you seam the pieces together.

Joining the Front & Back Pieces of the Flower Pillow
Place the wrong sides of each circle together. You will now stitch the circles together to create the pillow cover. Working through the Back Loops only, single crochet in each stitch around. Only crochet about 50 to 55 single crochets, then insert the pillow form or fiber fill. Then continue to single crochet the opening closed, join in the top of the 1st single crochet to complete the round.

Adding the Petals in the Final Round
Now we get to begin the cute petals on the pillow. You will be working into the top of the single crochets from the last round.
Petal Round: Do not ch, [skip 2 sts, in the next st work all the following (tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, slst in the back bar of the ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr), skip 2 sts, slst in next st], repeat [ ] around, after last slst, work an invisible join in the next st, fasten off and weave in ends. (13 petals).
