White Piping:

To add the white piping (frosting) around the top of the hat, using a Hook H, join in the 1st st of the row that you work the backloops only of (R5). You will work in the front loops only of this round. Ch 1 (sc, ch 1) in each stitch around, join, and fasten off. This row will have a ruffled/wavy look to it, just like the frosting on a gingerbread man.

Cheeks (make 2):

Using Red Yarn and Hook H

Ch 2, 8 sc in 1st ch from hook, join in the top of beginning sc, fasten off, leave some yarn to sew onto the hat.

Bow for Girl Version:

Using Red Yarn and Hook H

R1: Ch 5, 4tc in 5th ch from hook, ch 4, slst in beg ch, rotate work (row 2 will be worked on the other side of the beginning chain)

R2: Ch 4, 4tc in same st, ch 4, slst into same st, fasten off, and leave about 12 inches of yarn that you will use to wrap and sew the bow onto the hat.

Finishing Detail: wrap the yarn tail around the center of the bow about 10 times, and tie a knot to fasten the wrapped yarn around the bow. Once the wrap is secured, go ahead and sew the bow to the top side of the hat.

Assembling the Hat Pieces (Eyes, Cheeks, Mouth & Bow):

The easiest way to place the pieces onto the hat is to lay the hat flat on your lap or tabletop. With the front side facing you (seam down the center of the back side), place the cheeks where you feel they look best and sew to the hat. After sewing the first cheek, check to make sure the rows match up with the 2nd cheek placement. Next, lay the hat flat again and place the button eyes and sew them onto the hat. Embroider a mouth that attaches the checks together. If you haven’t already, you can now attach the bow to the top side of the hat. Remember, it is very important to double-check for appropriate placement before beginning to sew on a new piece.
