There’s something magical about summer mornings—the air filled with singing birds, sunlight dancing through the leaves, and the gentle hum of life all around. This Summer Birds Table Runner captures that feeling in every stitch. Designed with charming birds nestled among leafy branches, it brings the beauty of the outdoors right to your table. Whether you’re setting the stage for a casual brunch or simply adding a seasonal touch to your home décor, this table runner is sure to brighten your space.
This design is part of my Four Seasons Table Runner Collection, with each piece inspired by the unique colors, textures, and moods of the season it represents. Summer’s version is full of life, warmth, and nature’s music—just like the season itself.
Pattern Overview
This table runner is designed with versatility in mind. You can customize the length to fit any table by choosing from four different sizes (or create your own). All sizes will be 11inches wide, but you can add repeat sections to adjust the length to the following: 27″, 55″, 81″ and 108″. You can also decide if you prefer the table runner to drape over the sides of your table’s edge as it is shown in the images. Or, you may prefer for the entire runner to be centered on top of the table. There is no right or wrong way, just personal preferences.

The runner is made using the signature knotted half double crochet that I use in most (but not all) of my color-changing designs. More information on this technique is below.
Have You Worked Color Changes in your crochet?
If you’ve been following me, you know my love of the knotted half double crochet. This stitch is what has allowed me to create some of the most beautiful designs using color changes. It creates gorgeous color transitions, clean lines, and angles among a full-bodied stitch.

The knotted half double crochet is a unique stitch that is new to many crocheters. I started designing with it in 2020 when I designed my Music to the Souls Blankets (and now I have over 30 patterns using it and many more designs on their way).
If you are new to crocheting color changes, it can be intimidating. Starting a large project can be extra intimidating because you want it to start and end with consistent quality of tension/gauge and stitches. It was important to me to make everyone feel confident when making one of my designs using the knotted half double crochet and working my graph patterns, so I created a full course that walks you through all the nitty-gritty you may want to know.
All my designs using this technique have full instructions in the pattern itself, but if you want to practice or need a little more guidance, please be sure to check out my Changing Colors Course.

Bringing the Summer Birds Table to Life – Thanks to Alaina, Lori, & Georgia!
The Table Runner designs have been sitting in my collection for a while—along with several other blankets—just waiting for the right time to be crocheted. With so many ideas and not enough hours in the day, I decided to reach out to my amazing community of followers for help in making samples. I was overwhelmed by the response and so grateful for the support!

All of the images you see in this blog post are courtesy of Alaina, Lori, & Georgia. All these ladies generously offered to crochet the table runner for me. Their thoughtful color choices and incredible attention to detail truly made the design shine. I’m so thankful for all of their time, talent, and the beautiful way they were able to bring this pattern to life! Thank you crochet friends!
