Crochet appliques can add to so many things whether they are crochet or not. One of the most popular appliques during fall are leaves. Crochet leaves of every kind can be found everywhere! Today, I want to share a more unique but fun shaped crochet leaf applique tutorial. The shape of this leaf is most similar to a hawthorn leaf but also looks like it could possibly be an oak or a maple leaf.

This cute little applique works up in minutes. Make one in every fall color to really boost your soul and prep for all that pumpkin spice you’ll be hearing about really soon!

Materials Needed for the crochet leaf:

You really can use any yarn weight and the hook size recommended on the yarn label. However, for the sample I will be crocheting in this tutorial, I used scrap amounts (a couple yards) worsted weight yarn and a crochet hook I (5.50 mm). I have 5 samples in many of the images in this post, the yarn used is either Premier Yarn Anti-Pilling Worsted (color: peach blossom & butter), Knit Picks Brava (sorry, I don’t know the exact colors) and Mary Maxim Natural Alpaca Tweed (color: sand dune)

Crochet Leaf Pattern Instructions:

Begin with your preferred yarn weight and the hooks size that is recommended on the yarn label. Start with a slip stitch and chain 16.

Hawthorn Leaf Beginning Chain

Complete a slip stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook and each of the next 5 chains, for a total of 6 slip stitches.

You will now begin a repeat section: chain 5, in the 3rd chain from the hook, complete two (2) double crochets.

Over the last 2 chains work a hdc2tog (half double crochet next 2 stitches together. To do this, yarn over, insert hook into 1st st, pull up a loop, yarn over, insert hook into 2nd st, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops on your hook to complete the stitch.

Continue working along the beginning chains, skip the next chain and work a single crochet into the next chain. Slip Stitch into each of the next two (2) chains.

You have now completed your first repeat. Repeat this “bump” one more time with the following instructions:

  • Chain 5,
  • In the 3rd chain, work 2 double crochets,
  • Over the next 2 chains work a hdc2tog (half double crochet two stitches together),
  • Working along beginning chain, skip next st, single crochet in the next stitch,
  • Slip Stitch into the next stitch

You should now have one (1) chain remaining.

Crochet the tip of the leaf

One chain remains, you will crochet the tip of the leaf in this chain. Working in just the back loop (or one side) of the chain crochet the following (single crochet AND two double crochets).

All stitches have been completed along the beginning chain. However, it is now time to rotate the beginning chain and work along the opposite side. In the first chain (opposite side of what you just worked) complete the following stitches (two double crochets AND one single crochet), then slip stitch into the next two chains.

Now you will work 2 more repeats as follows:

  • Chain 5,
  • In the 3rd chain, work 2 double crochets,
  • Over the next 2 chains work a hdc2tog (half double crochet two stitches together),
  • Working along beginning chain, skip next st, single crochet in the next stitch,
  • Slip Stitch into the next stitch

And to finish, slip stitch in each remaining chain to the end of the leaf stem. Fasten off and weave in the yarn ends OR leave them for sewing the applique onto a cute fall project.

What Do I do with the Leaf Applique?

Popcorn Stitch

Appliques are so fun and have so many useful ways to use them. I originally designed this leaf to just be attached to the top of a pinecone / acorn crochet hat. It was so cute to add a little pop of color to this darling children’s hat, you can find the pattern to the hat in the button below.

See How I Sew On Appliques

The more popular use for a leaf applique like this is to sew it onto another crochet piece. It could be a blanket, handbag, garment, or just about anything.

I love adding small appliques to projects but I often receive questions on how to. Many crocheters have tried and struggle over how to keep the project looking nice on the backside, or make it so you cannot see the seaming. I created a tutorial years ago that will help you out. You can watch it on YouTube or read my article that includes a full photo tutorial.

Hawthorn Leaf Video Tutorial

As I mentioned earlier in the blog post, I created a video tutorial on how to crochet this hawthorn leaf applique too. I am a visual learner and know that so many of you are too. I hope you find this tutorial easy and that it might help you with any questions you still have.
