If you’re a crochet enthusiast or a proud parent looking to add a touch of nature-inspired charm to your baby’s nursery, the new “Where the Buffalo Roam” blanket is the perfect project for you. Building onto the beloved Diagonal Delights Baby Blanket, this new design elevates the cozy, textured blanket with delightful appliques of clouds, trees, and buffalo, transforming the blanket into a whimsical piece that sparks the imagination.

Buffalo Roam Blanket

Inspired by the “home on the range” song and of course the serene landscapes where buffalo roam free, this blanket aims to bring the beauty of nature into your child’s world. Imagine the peaceful prairies, the majestic pine forests, and the vast, open skies dotted with fluffy clouds. These elements come together to create a blanket that not only provides warmth and comfort but also tells a story.

Diagonal Delights Blanket for Baby

The Original Diagonal Delights Baby Blanket

Before diving into the new design, let’s take a moment to appreciate the foundation: the Diagonal Delights Baby Blanket. Known for its striking diagonal stripes and texture, this blanket has been a favorite among crocheters for its simplicity and elegance. The original pattern is constructed like a corner-to-corner (c2c) blanket but does NOT use the traditional block stitch, instead it is created with a side shell stitch that shows off rich texture throughout the blanket.

Introducing the Appliques: Clouds, Pine Trees, and Buffalo

The “Where the Buffalo Roam” blanket takes the Diagonal Delights design and adds a new layer of creativity with carefully crafted appliques. These additional elements bring the blanket to life, making it not just a blanket, but a piece of charming art.

  • Cloud Appliques: Soft, fluffy clouds are placed in the dreamy sky upper corner of the blanket. The simple and basic clouds keep the flow of the blanket and it’s simplistic yet organized look.
  • Tree Appliques: Majestic pine trees stand tall, their triangular shapes and slight puff stitches add a touch of forested foothills.
  • Buffalo Appliques: Just above the tree line you will see the star of the blanket, the buffalo appliques. Crafted with a unique one-piece applique that is then folded to show layers and the cute animal detail, these appliques are fun to make.

The Perfect Gift

The “Where the Buffalo Roam” blanket makes a thoughtful and unique gift for baby showers, birthdays, or just because. It’s not only a practical item but also a keepsake that can be cherished for years. The nature-inspired design encourages a love for the outdoors and a sense of adventure in the little ones who use it.

The finished size of the blanket is 42″ square. This is a great for babies to use as a lay on, roll around, play mat and is big enough that as they grow into their toddler and youth years they won’t out-grow it too fast.

The blanket is made to measurements, so you can easily adjust the size of your blanket. Be aware that if you do adjust the size and/or yarn you may need to rework the width of the stripes and your applique sizes may vary as well.
