Convert A Cowl to A Hat

No Comments on Convert A Cowl to A Hat

Are you in search for a versatile crochet piece that can convert a cowl into a hat? Well, today is your lucky day!

I love finding accessories that can be used in multiple ways. Especially, if it can change according to the weather that so often varies so much everyday. The chilly mornings, to warmer afternoons and back to an evening chill.

I was very excited to come up with the Convert A Cowl Crochet Pattern and it is ready for you to crochet one for yourself.

Tie it up high, it’s a hat

Tie it down low-it’s a cowl

About the Convert A Cowl Pattern

The popular cowl/hat combo is the perfect accessory for this year! Made in a beautiful textured stitch that creates a soft drape to the hat and cowl. Simply tie the pom drawstrings together to make it a slouchy hat. Un-tie them and pull it over your head for a fun cowl.

The Convert A Cowl is made in worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Heartland and love the subtle variations in the mossy green color. The pattern comes in sizes for child, teen/ladies, adult/men’s.

Elephant Stuffy Pattern Release

1 Comment on Elephant Stuffy Pattern Release

Last year I designed a set of fun stuffy animals with the intent of newborn photographers in mind, but they are being made by so many and are made for everyone! I designed a teddy bear, fox and bunny. They were so successful and I have received so many wonderful comments about them I have thought about extending the line of stuffies. So when I received a message about how to alter the bunny into an elephant I ran with the idea.

Look at how cute he turned out!
This little guy stands at about 6 1/2″ tall and is slightly stockier than my other stuffies.
Grab your copy on:
Now how about make this into a darling set and add a matching hat, oh that would be too cute!
The Elephant Earflap Hat can be ordered on:
And here are the other animal stuffies I mentioned earlier.
I hope you enjoy each and everyone of them.

Knot Knit Beanie – Crochet Pattern

No Comments on Knot Knit Beanie – Crochet Pattern

As a long time crocheter, I have always admired knit garments. I love the woven look to them and even tried to learn to knit. I just found it hard to use two needles and the time I spent on the small project was not very productive. But, I still love and admire those knit projects.

But now I can enjoy making a crochet pattern that looks knit!
Yes, you read that right. Through many internet searches I kept seeing an image of a vintage stitch that looked woven. After trying to figure the stitch out I finally got it and had to use the stitch on a hat and I was so excited with the end result.

The pattern has sizing from Newborn up to Adult and has instructions to make them with the double stripes or to make it in a solid color.
Grab your copy of the pattern in any of my shops:
I did include a photo tutorial of the stitch.
While my testers were reviewing the pattern one of them mentioned that they had viewed a great video of the stitch, see below (they used a different name for the stitch but it is worked the same way). I hope you find this helpful.

Enjoy the pattern and make sure to follow me on facebook so you don’t miss any new pattern releases or promotions.

Serenity Yoga / Beach Tote Crochet Pattern

A friendly crochet design competition can be so fun and challenging all at the same time. I recently was a participant in one and designed the Serenity Yoga / Beach Tote. Keep reading so see how this design came to be.

As a competitor, I received a theme, a stitch and was given 4 weeks to be ready to release! The pattern had to be designed, written, tested and photographed with deadlines along the way.

The Theme: Serenity

I was so excited to hear about the theme. When I think of, Serenity, I think of being at peace, in nature and feeling relaxed. To me, there is no better place than to be in the Mountains. The above photo was a photo we took on a recent hike I went on with my family in the Payette National Forest in Central Idaho.

The Stitch: Serenity

A few days later the stitch was released. I was surprised to hear that it was called, SERENITY, as well. The Serenity stitch is basically a picot, cluster, picot repeat. We were shown this as a sample.

Now, I was ready for the design frenzy that was going on through my head. I had about 4 or 5 designs and really struggled on settling on one. However, in the end, my thoughts about serenity was always,
Quiet, Meditative, Nature,

The Design: Serenity Yoga / Beach Tote

I had so much fun designing this tote. It is something different than my typical design style. I really tried to push my level of creativity and loved seeing the bottom of the bag change with each row. I used Premier Yarns Cotton and loved working with this yarn. It will wear nicely and wash up great!

I made the bottom of the tote fun and colorful, as the bottom turns the corner it is solid for a more stable base to the tote and allows the yoga mat to easily sit at the bottom. About 4″ from the base you get to see the beauty of the serenity stitch begin and show off the delicateness of the stitch repeats.

After adding a shoulder strap and a drawstring closure the tote is done!

But, not everyone is into yoga. I want everyone to be able to make this toe because it is so much fun! So, I included instructions to make the tote smaller and it will work perfect for a day at the beach. The photo’s below are courtesy of Nondas from Yarn Medleys from the Heart.

Kendal, from Kendal’s Kreations, also made a beautiful full sized Yoga Tote.

And one more fabulous sample is by Gillian from Enfy’s Creations.

Animal Stuffy Set – Pattern Release

You have all seen the adorable bonnet/stuffy sets out there. I have even released a few. But each time I do someone asks for just the stuffy pattern. So here goes!

Grab your copy on Ravelry / Craftsy / Etsy
The stuffy pattern includes the Teddy Bear, Fox and Bunny Stuffies. They are about 7 inches tall, the bunny does measure 8 inches when including the tall ears. These are adorable to add to a newborn gift with a blanket, bottle or jumper set. The stuffies will also fit nicely in a Christmas stocking or Easter basket.

I hope you enjoy the pattern set.

Grease Monkey Cap Pattern Release

No Comments on Grease Monkey Cap Pattern Release
A few years ago I had a photographer contact me about a custom hat that she wanted to go with one of her new props. If you know me, this is what I love! She sent me a picture and we worked together through a few different designs until we got it right. What do you think?
The Grease Monkey Cap fit the picture perfect! I love how it came together and it is now a new pattern released from My Sweet Potato 3 Patterns.
Grab your copy on:
The vintage look of the Grease Monkey Cap is seen in the entire design. The hat is made to sit above the ears (not cover them like most traditional crochet hats). The brim is made extra long to help create that vintage “flip” look. There are directions on where to fold the brim to get it to flip correctly. The pattern includes sizes from newborn up to adult. Here a a few views of the hat from the front and side (excuse the baby watermelon, it was the only thing that was the right size for a 12 month hat).

Just for fun, here is the original image I was sent as a sample.

Easter Egg Display – Crochet Pattern

Remembering my Grandmother and her love of thread crochet is what inspired the Easter Egg Display Pattern. Each year my Mom displays a large egg with Easter trinkets inside that my Grandma made. It wouldn’t be Easter at Mom’s without that out on the entryway table. I wanted to bring some of that into my own home and so I created a much smaller version with more detailed design and I hope you like it to.

The Easter Egg Display features a chevron pattern around the main part of the egg with a simple pattern on the top and bottom. The bottom is made flat so it can stand by itself. The pattern includes instructions on how to starch (stiffen) the final egg using household items. The Easter Egg Display stands about 10″ tall and is about 8″ wide. What a fun gift for Easter or a great memory your kids can have as you bring out the Display each year.

You can get your copy of the Easter Egg Display Pattern on:

No Comments on Bunny & Fox Bonnets & Stuffy Pattern Releases!
I have received so many comments about the Teddy Bear Set, I mean seriously, it is so cute!

I had to create some more with and the requests came from all of you. I am excited to show you the Bunny & Fox Sets. They have been shipped off to be photographed so you will see they are just as darling soon.

Both of these crochet pattern comes with complete instructions for this adorable Stuffy and matching Bonnet. The completed bunny stuffy is about 8″ tall, from ear tips to bottom of feet.
The completed fox stuffy is about 7″ tall.

The Bunny Bonnet is a simple design with a ridged/cable effect that frames the face, this adds just a touch of character and strength to help hold the ears up on the bonnet. The ears are flexible and can stand straight up or with a simple fold they can bend downwards. The bonnet comes in sizes from newborn up to child.

The Fox bonnet is also a simple design but has a criss cross design that begins about a third of the way back from the front of the bonnet. The criss crosses are only for character and add a lot of it! The bonnet comes in sizes from newborn up to child.

This is a lovely set for any Mom to be,

Free Mustache Cowl Crochet Pattern

4 Comments on Free Mustache Cowl Crochet Pattern
A Cute, Fun, Unique, Sure to Make You SMILE Cowl!
The mustache cowl is all those wonderful things and is a free pattern to you from

free mustache cowl pattern

This fun cowl is quick to make and would be fun in any colors. I personally like the vibrant and bright colors for the dreary days of winter. Seriously, we haven’t seen sunshine for almost 3 weeks. I needed something bright and colorful to work on!

Save this pattern in your Ravelry Account for easy access.

For the cowl, it is a very basic crochet pattern and can easily be adjusted for any size. I made the child size but alternative stitch counts in parenthesis would be for an adult size.

free cowl pattern

The Cowl Pattern:

For your gauge check use Hook K = 9 rows and 12 hdc = 4 inches square

Using Worsted Weight Yarn and Crochet Hook K (6.5 mm)

Work 65 (80) foundationless hdc, join in first hdc making sure not to twist, this will form a ring (tutorial here-also know as a foundation hdc- I know that doesn’t make much sense)
Row 2-18 (24): Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join, after last row is completed,
Fasten off and bury all ends, You will need to also sew/join the bottom of the first and last hdc from the foundation row.

Laying flat the completed measurements for the cowl are:
Child Size = 11 inches wide X 8 inches high
Adult Size = 15 inches wide X 10 1/2 inches high

Mustache Cowl Pattern

For the Mustache I used the pattern by Jessica Chong on Ravelry. Again I used worsted weight yarn but used a crochet hook K (6.5 mm) instead of what was recommended. The pattern is very easy to follow and works up quick.

I sewed on the mustache to the cowl so that the top of the mustache was just below the 3rd row from the top (the mustache curl tips was about 1 1/2 rows from the top).

Look how cute and easy they turned out. This pattern is sure to be a hit for whoever receives the finished cowl and will turn heads and make all who see it smile!

I hope you enjoyed the pattern and decide to follow Sweet Potato 3 Patterns on facebook for patterns, tutorials and lots of crochet fun!

Need a Hat Too?

Well you are in luck, I offer a FREE pattern for a basic hat that includes the options to add ear flaps. I even have a sample with the same mustache on it. Get more information on the Free Basic Hat pattern by clicking this LINK.

Triangle Twist Newborn Bowl – Pattern Release

No Comments on Triangle Twist Newborn Bowl – Pattern Release
The new Triangle Twist Newborn Bowl is a beautiful and delicate newborn photography prop.

The Triangle Twist Newborn Nesting Bowl is just what you have been looking for. By using a unique Triangle Twist Stitch (explained with a photo tutorial in the pattern) you create an open stitch that tiny fingers and toes can poke out of.

Wrap up the newborn to resemble to womb will capture a natural and delicate look.

The design is elegant but make the pattern with mohair and it is stunning. Mohair is popular in newborn photo shoots because it exudes the fragility of newborn life. Capture those first moments with the design of a nesting bowl.

Soccer Ball Crochet Hat Pattern

No Comments on Soccer Ball Crochet Hat Pattern
Soccer Ball Hat Pattern

When I started selling completed crochet hats back in 2011, I had a custom request for a soccer ball hat. The request was for it to NOT be a plain white hat with black shapes sewn on. I searched high and low for a pattern and was having no luck!

So I grabbed my crochet hooks, my yarn and my son’s soccer ball; I was going to make this work! I was determined to figure something out.

My first hat probably took close to 12 hours to figure out. I crocheted and frog many times and came really close to giving up. But the picture above is proof that it turned out and was a hit!

How the Soccer Ball Hat became my first published pattern!

I listed that hat and sold 2 the first day. The even more exciting part was that I also received 3 messages from other crocheters asking where I got the pattern.

I told them I had looked for one forever and just made it up, to my surprise, each person I told that to requested the pattern and said they would purchase it. The thought of selling patterns had not crossed my mind.

It took awhile to decipher my notes, decide on a layout and have a few friends test the pattern for me. It was such a success I even branched out and started an entire pattern designing business, Sweet Potato 3!

More About the Soccer Ball Hat pattern

The hat is made by making individual shapes and stitching them together. Once the shapes are stitched together you crochet around the base of the hat filling in the odd shapes with stitches of different heights to make it all align.

Once the main hat is crocheted you can decide if you love it how it is, want to add a brim or if you would like ear flaps to your design. Each hat you make will have that traditional soccer ball look but can be changed with these design elements.

Consider changing out the colors for a fun twist on a traditionally white and black hat, whichever color you choose, it will be a hit.

Some fun examples of how to customize your hat

I used the hat pattern to make some fun custom Valentines Day hats. Check out how cute they turned out.

All these hats look different by adding a different colored band, or adding stripes throughout the hat. Adding ear flaps also gives it a whole new look. Then add cute appliques, like hearts or mustaches. Embroider letters to make them pop or add cute messages.
